Tim Smith qualified as a solicitor in 1983 and has been working in the music and entertainment industry both in private practice and as an in-house adviser for major and independent record labels (Virgin, EMI, Universal, Sanctuary, BMG Rights) and other rights owning companies. He has been involved in many high level and industry wide negotiations with content users such as iTunes.
Tim was part of the Universal Music team working with LOCOG and IOC in connection with licensing and use of music in the Olympic venues and arranging the licensing and release of the 2012 Olympic Albums.
Tim has also acted for a number of artist and celebrity clients in the music and fashion industries together with songwriters, managers, producers and independent record labels, advising on a wide range of contracts including songwriting, recording, management, merchandising, branding and endorsement agreements.
Tim has been a Director of PPL and VPL and sat as an industry representative on the BPI Rights committee, PPL Performer Board and AIM Business Affairs Committee and recently advised and represented the Featured Artist Coalition on the implications and effects of the Copyright Term Extension legislation.
